Rules and Civilization

We have rules at our house. Rules are what keeps society in order. Rules put the "kind" in mankind. Rules are what separates us from the animals; that and Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies.

We have a rule at our house that the last person to come to bed has to turn out the lights.

Everyone knows this is a rule. Everyone has this rule. It is a common rule throughout the entire world. Maybe you didn't know this was a rule, but everyone else knows this is a rule so we can say it is a common rule.

There is some disagreement as to the procedure for establishing rules at our house. But the use of common sense should tell us that the last person to come to bed MUST turn out the last light in the room. This plus the "common rule" use as described above.

The most civilized people on the planet are the Royal Family in England. I’m sure when royalty goes to bed the last royal has to turn out the lights, unless they have maid or man servants who have this job. It may be a union job, so maybe the royals do not turn out the lights. But if they were not Royalty and had no man and maid servants then they would have to have this rule.

I'm sure everyone else has a rule where the last one to bed turns out the lights.

But my wife refuses to turn out the lights when she comes to bed. She says it’s on my side of the bed so I need to do it. This is of course a flagrant violation of the rule.

She is a rebel, absent the tattoos and the mean attitude.

Please offer me your suggestions on how to make my house and home more civilized. But more importantly so I don't have to get out of bed to turn off the light.

Thank you.
