The old watering hole
An Amish friend of mine is a painter. She asked me from time to time to take a picture and then she would paint the scene. In one of those discussions this water trough was a subject.
I drove (and still drive) by this once in a while and never considered it much. She lives about 12 miles or so from Shipshewana. On here trip to Shipshe she stops and waters her horse here and gets a drink for herself.
You can see the porcelain cup hanging there for people. The water flows constantly from an underground spring.
She told me how significant this stop was to her and her horse. It was very helpful, especially in summer to have this place to get a drink.
I made it a point to capture the scene.
One day in summer I happened past this place and two middle aged "English" ladies were stopped there. Their car was pulled off the road. At first I thought maybe they had car trouble, but no they were getting a drink.
They acted like they had just discovered something significant. i wondered if they thought this water special or more healthy than other water.
In any event they didn't need help. And I felt like I'd intruded upon their discovery. It was like they were pretending to be the first non-Amish to have discovered this spring and to get a drink. (I'm guessing that they didn't use the porcelain cup.)
Now this picturesque metal water trough is blue plastic. It does the job, but it doesn't make for great pictures.
