Eating at Whole Foods"

Pam and I went to Whole Foods. We didn’t have a Whole Foods near to us in Indiana. They tend to put these stores in areas where there are many people and where said people are living above middle class income levels. Where we live there are not many people and most all of us are middle income.

So Whole Foods was new to us. We went in to buy somthing-or-other. While we were there they started work on fresh food on big table. It was obviously a “take out” type arrangement. It looked to me like a salad bar and the lettuce, spinach and spring greens were there as well as many accoutrements. There were other cold salads of many kinds.

I thought this is okay and I can get a nice salad here for lunch.

The price on the sign said $11.59 and there were these nice, big plastic containers. While $11.59 might be a little high for a salad I thought I could cram a lot in one of those containers and “make out” okay.

Then they started bringing out hot food.

Hold the phone!

Fried rice, orange chicken, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, chicken strips… They were bring out hot food and filling up a second table. And then a third.

Food everywhere.

What looked once to be a marginally good buy was becoming a real bargain as I could see that I could stuff one of those boxes full of food. Enough for lunch and dinner for sure.

So I did.

When we got to the cash register to pay I learned that the sign had some smaller print. That print said “Per Pound”. So instead of $11.59 it was well over $25.

Apparently they teach reading in Indiana where Pam is from and her bill was much less. In Missouri we didn’t learn to read the fine print. I don’t remember for sure but usually during these times Pam will say something like, “I wondered what you were doing.”

We still go to Whole Foods and we still get food to go from their buffet tables, but now I know how to fill my plastic container.
